A Welcomed Gift

My last blog post was interrupted by the cable guy, which is a story in and of itself. Let's just say that it was their fourth time here and that the first two guys did nothing but avoid doing their jobs correctly. You know those young guys who think they can tell an old lady what she really wants. They must have no respect for their mothers or grandmothers because they talk down to you, threaten to leave if you aren't going to be satisfied with what they graciously do and they spend more time talking their way out of doing something then it takes to do it. Anyway, the third guy actually takes pride in his job and he recognized that these other guys didn't do their job right. So he brought another installer here yesterday and they re-wired everything and now my internet connection works perfectly, instead of at DSL speed or slower. Plus, they gave me two weeks credit on my bill. Patience paid off.

Anyways, as I was saying in my last post, the thing I looked forward to the most was my hummingbird feeder. I put it up and the next day this guy showed up. This was a pleasant surprise because I really thought it would be a while before they found it - especially with all of the wildflowers that are blooming.

I started getting sick again but luckily caught it before things got too bad and am now on the mend. Somedays I do shake my head and wonder what it is all about. You know, like, just give me a break - find me a calm spot in this rushing stream.

Luckily there are always bright spots if I look for them. Next week I get to go up to Mt. Rainier! Funny, I've lived back in the area for more than two years, move to the other side of the mountains and finally get to see one of Washington's most treasured places. I can't wait! Hopefully I'll come back with lots of good photos and memories to share.

Ranier is amazing, like all the mts there..I remember being in Vancouver and waking up at dawn...there was nobody else up, so I got in the car and drove around...when I got out to the highway it was such a rush to see them...poor ol blowed up St Helens...if it was warm there I would have moved.OH, last week I had a burrowing owl just about fly in my face rt at dusk while watering the citrus trees.Such a close call and the lil critter flew over and perched on a fencepost about 10 feet away...looking at me and making neat noises, so I mimicked the noises and it talked backm or so it seemed...then it swooped down right at my feet and scooped up some long dry grass and flew to an oak further away.It was wicked cool..and they are only in the NW and Fl here...TCBS BC

Your pics always just blow me away! They're all so beautiful!

I had a hummingbird speed by flying through my carport a few weeks ago, so I cleaned my feeder & filled it up. Haven't seen one since. 3 years ago I counted 8 different ones at my house. They say there are usually twice as many as you see. What's twice of none? I so love them & would love to have many more buzzing around. Hopefully they'll come back soon. Maybe I need to fill the feeder in the back yard too.

Actually, we have burrowing owls here in Arizona. They pop up occasionally when I ride in the evening through the desert, and one of my biology classes relocated a group from a new subdivision sight, building an underground burrow, fencing it for three months, and feeding them frozen/thawed mice, then taking down the fence so they could have a go on their own... Did you know the male feeds the female when she is on the eggs?

You sound better, I'm glad. I can't wait to see your new photos. Love this little hummingbird. When I was in Colorado two years ago I went to this little town called St. Elmo... it was a bit of tourist destination at the top of a mountain and was once a mining town and is said to be haunted. ANYWAYS, they had these hummingbird feeders all over. I never saw so many hummingbirds, it was so cool. They also had chipmunks all over that would eat out of your hand and sit in your lap.

So that's my hummingbird story.

Wow Chris, I bet that little owl was cute. I haven't lucked into the owls yet but it is just a matter of time. Thanks for sharing the stories!

Oh yeah, fill all of the feeders and keep them clean. The hummingbirds have to be about the coolest birds ever. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Sunshine - I wonder if a lot of the male birds don't do that - bring food to the mothers. It has to beat sitting on those eggs!

I bet that those hummingbirds were a sight. When I lived in New Mexico there were hundreds in my yard every day. I had to fill the feeders twice a day sometimes.

Thank you Ron! Hummingbirds are an easy subject, if you can catch them sitting still.

June is quite a photographer - and she tells me about how she has chased hummingbirds, butterflies and birds all over a park!!

Oh, and don't forget bumble bees! The trick is being patient enough to all them to come to you and that is a hard one. That is one of the reasons I put out bird feeders and plant flowers, it is all a bribe to get the birds to pose for me.
